A judge, a sudden death… by poison.
                   Who’s the culprit ? The lifelong lover? Or the lover’s longsuffering
                  and knowing  husband ? Or one of the criminals that the judge
                   has sent to jail to expiate a just  or unjust punishment.

The fifty-year old Prosecutor Valerio Garau is poisoned after drinking a coffee in the bar inside the Court of Sassari together with her long-time lover, Lauretta, a magistrate. 
The whole Procura is in a turmoil. While everybody wonders who will be charged with this unpleasant investigation, the Judge of the Court of Palermo entrusts Piero with the case. 
Piero has no particular ambitions and his career isn't exactly exemplary but he takes the opportunity because he hopes to gain some popularity. He will nevertheless become entangled in a very complicated case where the Procura of Sassari will appear to his eyes as full of gossips and obscure manoeuvres.
