Adele and Marcello  were marked by fate at birth: they were born on the 16th of April 1927, at the same moment, delivered by their mothers just a few inches from each other. From that moment on the two of them live in continual symbiosis, magically sharing sensations,  emotions and experiences. Before a scanty group of friends and with the complicity of Loris, an awkward
altar boy a few years older, they celebrate, still children, their unlikelymarriage.Inside a small abandoned chapel they swear eternal love and exchange two rubber rings made from a bicycle inner tube.
The pair in love lose sight of each other not long afterwards, separated by the events of the second world war, but their dream, fed with hope and memories, will continue.

Adele’s and Marcello’s lives run parallel for long years, overlapping at times by a destiny that lets them brush close to each other for a few seconds, for a few yards, or for a word or two.

For Loris, witness and narrator of their long story, the two friends at times seem terribly close, soul mates inevitably attracted by a natural reciprocal dependency; at times the same magic that unites them seems to move them away from each other irreparably.
In spite of this, their inseparable rubber ring keeps them from feeling alone, always giving them the impression of the same feeling being exchanged without reservations, the hope of having someone somewhere to count on.
