Assunta Spina,
a passionate,
strong-willed, beautiful woman, from among all the workers in the
laundry run by Donna Rosa, a stern, severe boss lady, is the only one
who knows how to read and write. She was taught by one of the customers,
the journalist Matilde Serao, touched by the young woman’s determination
to pull herself out of poverty.
Engaged to Salvatore, a sailor, Assunta is longed for by Michele, a wealthy but violent butcher whose love for Assunta is primitive and strong. When Salvatore sets to sea, abandoning her, Assunta ends up in a relationship with Michele where gratitude and resentment are mixed.
Their bond is stormy: blinded by jealousy Michele disfigures her and ends up in prison. To prevent her man from doing his time far from Naples, Assunts seeks help from the judge, Federico Funelli. And it is with Funelli that Assunta finally discovers the fullness of passion. But when the judge wants to set her aside to return to the ranks of his family and dedicate himself to his political career, Assunta rebels and Michele, who has just been released from prison, becomes the author of her revenge.
