Synopsis
Berlin. Hans, who lives in the East part, meets Kate before the city is divided. Hans was born and bred in the East, but he is not a communist. When on 13 August 1961, the border between the two halves of the city is closed, Hans clandestinely crosses the demarcation line with the intention of joining up with the girl. Once he has reached Kate, he would stay in the West, but the fear of causing trouble for his family make him return home, where he is punished. Hans cannot bear the long separation from Kate but, attempting to cross the line once again, he is killed.
